1 Peter 1:6-9 Salvation is not intended for individual benefit, it aims to establish new worlds free from conflict and suffering
1 Peter 1:6-9
In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.
Background
Considering the salvation that is reserved for believers in heaven, we foster faith and the right motivation when confronted with life’s challenges. These trials are designed to equip us to reign alongside Christ to bring forth new worlds where righteousness prevails. Therefore, without trials, no one can attain the proper motivation to qualify for salvation and renew the worlds. Today’s devotion teaches us: Salvation is not intended for individual benefit, it aims to establish new worlds free from conflict and suffering.
Observation
Peter encourages the hearers to rejoice in this salvation, even in the face of trials, grief and distress. These challenges cultivate faith; perseverance, character and love which is essential in bringing salvation to themselves and to all creation. When Jesus Christ returns, He will bestow praise, glory, and honor upon them and they will reign with Him as kings over creation.
Further to this, Peter commends those who had the right motivation, who persevere in loving and believing in God even without seeing Him. People with the right motivation do not require persistent persuasion or incentives. For they are motivated purely by truth and love. They do not grumble or complain but persist in following the path of the cross despite facing injustice and oppositions.
What is the reward for such genuine motivations? It is salvation; the privilege to reign with Christ in bringing healing, and restoration of righteousness and prosperity throughout creation.
Truth
Salvation is not intended for individual benefit, it aims to establish new worlds free from conflict and suffering.
Many aspire to rule alongside Christ because they desire honor and power. However, Jesus sought not a position of honor but to establish new worlds where righteousness dwells. For this reason, Jesus is willing to endure humiliation, even facing death as a condemned criminal, all to bring forth new heavens and a new earth.
Some declare, “No cross. No crown!” while openly yearning for the crown. They view humility merely as a means to obtain a place of honor. While they may seem noble and humble, their true nature is one of pride and a thirst for power.
Why did Jesus accept God’s appointment as King of kings, and Ruler of all creation? Because God recognized Jesus as one who is genuinely motivated, who is righteous, compassionate and humble. Indeed, there is none like Him. Only someone who embodies righteousness, compassion, and humility can create worlds where these virtues thrive. Therefore, Jesus viewed His appointment not as a means to seek worship or service for Himself, but as an opportunity to bring forth the new worlds. And He commands that His reign be upheld and extended throughout all of creation.
Therefore, those who wish to reign with Christ must embrace trials that purify their hearts so as to share in His motivations and virtues. Salvation is not a personal gain; it is the opportunity to help bring forth new worlds free from war, sorrow, pain, and poverty. Instead of seeing heaven as a personal prize, believers should strive to bring heaven to the farthest reaches of the universe.
Application
Be assured and comforted that your name is written in heaven. Based on this assurance, let us serve with grace and truth. Grace; to serve freely without asking for anything in return. Truth; because it is the right thing to do. And you will experience a new level of freedom and power in your service towards others.
Prayer
Dear Lord, I thank you for the profound destiny to reign alongside you. Nurture in me the qualities of perseverance, character and love. Teach me to operate in the power of the Holy Spirit. Reward me with your virtues and power, so that I can be a vessel of salvation to the world. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
