Matthew 1:22-25  His Name is Immanuel

Matthew 1:22-25

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

Background

When Joseph knew that Mary was with Child, and he sought to divorce her discreetly. An angel came into his dream and told him about Mary’s extraordinary conception as foretold by the prophet concerning Christ.

Observation

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel – The angel gave explicit instruction that His name shall be called Immanuel, which is God with us. This Messiah is unique and different from all other great judges, kings and prophets of Israel in that He will be a constant and perpetual companion of man. The Messiah is fully divine and He dwells within believers and journey with them regardless of their weaknesses and moral condition. Today, the Immanuel dwells within believers forever through the Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of Christ.

Truth

True love and friendship is expressed by being present and available for our friends during times of difficulties. Christ’s name is Immanuel, which is God with us. Christ did not come merely to fix the sin problem by taking on our curses through the cross. But He endeavored to journey with us through the Spirit after He ascended to the Father. Therefore, as we have been loved by the continual presence of Christ, let us also be present for those who struggle in the challenges of life. People are so accustomed to fixing problems by giving money and words of counsel because they could not sacrifice their time. What people truly need is love expressed by journeying with them through life’s challenges. Money could solve a lot of physical needs, but enduring transformation of hearts and minds can only come through the presence of another human being.

Application

  1. Make it a daily habit to be aware of the presence of Immanuel, the Holy Spirit. As you yield your plans to Him and depend on His power, you will be filled with peace and joy every moment of the day. Treasure and cherish the relationships around you and be a blessing to them. Money and things may give us physical comfort, but true happiness comes from our relationship with God and with people.
  2. Ask God to show you the people that he wanted you to journey with and be a friend. Speak less and listen more to what they say and feel. People do not need more solutions, but they do need someone who care to listen and share their burdens with.

Dear Lord, I thank you for being with me even though I am not aware of your constant presence. Strengthen me and take away my anxieties. Cause me to a genuine friend and to walk with those who need help. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
